The fifth MIRRI SR hackathon in Prešov, held in the unique setting of the Solivar Museum, proved that an inspiring environment fosters innovative solutions. The hackathon, funded by Slovakia’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, brought together approximately 60 hackers who formed 15 competing teams. Over two days, passionate programmers and IT enthusiasts developed smart solutions to the challenge: Create a feasible, detailed concept/prototype for a digital twin of the city of Prešov, providing enhanced services and more efficient management for residents and the city administration in one of the specified areas.
The theme of the Digital Twin of the City of Prešov Hackathon was to develop an innovative city model that allows for the simulation of various scenarios in energy management, transportation, environment, security, urban planning, and waste management, providing real-time responses and predicting their real-world impact.
Winning Solution: Real-Time Energy Consumption Measurement
The first place was awarded to Team NO LIMIT, which developed a solution for measuring the instantaneous electricity consumption of Prešov’s public buildings, publishing the data in the city's data warehouse, and visualizing consumption over any selected time period through interactive graphs.

Based on the hackathon’s outcomes, a public procurement process was launched to select a provider for the software solution (functional prototype) for real-time energy consumption monitoring in municipal buildings and facilities.
Pilot Testing at One of Prešov’s Largest Schools
The first pilot site for the project is Československej armády Primary School in Prešov, where ILT devices have been installed to monitor electricity and water consumption. A functional software prototype has been developed and tested, measuring real-time energy and water consumption, transmitting data to an MQTT server integrated into the solution, and ensuring compatibility with the city’s new data warehouse standard.
The software provides visual analytics on consumption trends based on predefined criteria and sends alerts about unusual spikes to administrators and users, allowing the school to optimize its consumption and respond quickly to critical situations such as pipe bursts or other anomalies.
The ILT meters and software solution are fully operational, with real-time water and energy consumption data being directed to an embedded server within the software. The system operates in a hybrid mode, transmitting data both to an MQTT software server and an external city data warehouse (Prešov’s GitLab repository). Over time, more public buildings will be integrated into the project, along with additional sensors and IoT device support (e.g., parking sensors).
